Lost dog tips
How to search for a missing dog, and what to do if you see one.
Searching
- Search on foot and by car, starting where your dog was last seen. Bring a leash, treats and a phone.
- Many dogs travel farther than cats. Widen your search over time and tell people along the way.
- Go out again at quiet times, early morning and evening, when a scared dog is more likely to move.
If you see your dog
- Don’t chase. Sit or crouch down, look away and toss treats on the ground.
- Speak in a calm, normal voice. A frightened dog may not recognize you at first.
Spread the word
- Post a free listing and put up flyers at busy corners.
- Call shelters, animal control and vets, and visit shelters in person.
- Consider a phone, fax and social media alert to reach homes, shelters and vets in a wider area. See packages.
