Searching in Houston: Houston storms can flood streets fast, and frightened pets often run far from home. After heavy rain, check garages, under raised porches and higher ground nearby, and check both the city and Harris County shelters, since a pet found in one part of the metro may go to either.
Heat and sudden storms are the biggest risks. Search early and late, check shade under cars and porches, and after heavy rain look along creeks and drainage channels. Big metro areas are split into many cities, so check shelters in neighboring cities too.
Shelters to check near Houston
- BARC Animal Shelter (City of Houston): the City of Houston shelter.
- Harris County Pets: the shelter for unincorporated Harris County.
Shelter hours and rules change, so check the shelter’s website or call before you go. Bring a photo of your pet and your ID. A pet can end up at a shelter in a nearby city or county, so check every shelter near where your pet was last seen, and visit in person.
